Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Wednesday praised the east African nation’s ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) for sweeping to landslide victory in civic polls held on Sunday.

“After the landslide victory we have now to join forces with other political parties in serving all people regardless of their political affiliations,” said Magufuli, who doubles as CCM national chairman.

Magufuli praised CCM in a live televised address by state-run Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation in Kahama district on his way to Shinyanga region.

He said elected CCM civic leaders should work hard in serving all Tanzanians regardless of their political parties’ affiliations.

On political parties that boycotted the elections citing electoral irregularities, Magufuli said boycotting the elections was part of the democratic process.

On Monday, the Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government, Selemani Jafo, announced that CCM garnered a landslide victory of 99.9 percent in the civic elections held across the east African nation on Sunday.

Jafo said in a news conference in the capital Dodoma that CCM won in 12,260 villages out of 12,262 villages which was equivalent to 99.9 percent victory.

At least 19.7 million Tanzanians on Sunday went to polls to elect civic leaders across the country.

Seven political parties, among 22 registered political parties, announced withdrawal from the elections, citing irregularities in the electoral process. Enditem.
